Alto Cayma Mission (a subset of Blessed Therese of Calcutta Parish)
The Alto Cayma mission is run by Father Alex Busuttil, a Catholic priest from the island of Malta who has been in Peru since 1994. Father Alex identified needs that go beyond his parish responsibilities. He has developed programs and organizations to address some of the need.
The Alto Cayma area of Arequipa, Peru has a population of over 30,000. Alto Cayma is a very poor section of the city. Most of the people in this area moved down from remote mountain villages to try to make a better life for themselves and their families. Though the mission provides many needed services to the people, only about 10% of the need is being met. The mission grows only as fast as the resources allow.
Though the parish is supported by the Catholic Church all of the Alto Cayma Mission programs are dependent on the financial support and resources of other organizations, churches, and individuals.
